First divide a 12” square into a four or six equal strips - horizontal or vertically. Both choices fit easily into 12 inches. This will create strips that are 3” wide or 2” wide, giving you the choice as to how intricate you would like to work. For help getting started, download our February Design Sheet.pdf
Between each line draw a zigzag from top to bottom. How loose or tight your zigzag is up to you. Even how even or regular it is. It can be a whacky lightening bolt design or a very evenly spaced ricrac design.
Interpret this in a quilt form - anything goes (pieced, applique, contemporary, traditional . . . etc . . . etc . . . etc).
Check out January’s instructions for some tips on how to choose a quilting design.
Bind and photograph your quilt.
Upload the picture to our challenge site (see below).

That’s it!

Remember, your quilt should finish 12-1/2” square (12” plus binding). If you want to vary this, that’s fine but don’t go crazy. We’re not aiming for bed quilts but small samples of pushing our boundaries.

Be sure to consider: color - value - contrast - pattern

Ready, Set, Go!

Also, don’t forget to upload the picture of your completed quilt(s) by January 31st. The results and next months challenge will be posted February 1st.

Click here to upload your quilt picture via email.
Or email it to: peawink-hw3v@post.me.com

Be sure to put your full name in the subject line and label your file: your name - quilt name.jpg

Submit an idea / description for next month, email Jovita.

THIS MYSTERY HAS BEEN REVEALED - If you would like to see how to put your sixteen quarter-square triangles together, click >> “Ohio Stars”

Fascinated by our new challenge but not sure where to start . . . how about a helping hand? If you like the idea of the challenge but are just as keen on a Mystery, we can accommodate you too! Remember this is the easiest challenge - there are hardly any rules at all.
Here’s just one version of Jovita’s answer to the challenge. New ideas are popping in her head everyday. She’s currently up to three samples and excited about revealing them to you on the 31st. Join in on the fun!
To complete this mystery challenge you’ll need just sixteen 4-1/2” squares. That’s it!
Choose six fabrics:
two backgrounds
four tone-one-tone or slight prints of close value. But if you take of your glasses or squint, you should still be able to see that they are different fabrics - consider scale, purity - is one “bluer” or “yellower” and pattern - dots, strips, floral, squiggles.
From each background, cut three 4-1/2” squares.
Label as Background One and Two.
From each color, cut two 4-1/2” squares.
Label A, B, C & D
Now combine the following right sides together.
A & B
C & D
A & Background One (BK1)
B & Background One (BK1)
C & Background Two (BK2)
D & Background Two (BK2)
Background One & Two - make this set twice.

Click here to see our tutorial for making
1/4- square triangles or “hourglass” units.

Using a sharp pencil draw a diagonal line across each set of squares.
Sew 1/4” away from each side of the line.
Cut apart on the drawn line and press as follows:
A / B towards B
C / D towards D
A & BK1 toward A
B & BK1 toward Background
C & BK2 toward Background
D & BK2 toward D
Press one BK1 & BK2 toward Background One and
Press the other BK1 & BK2 toward Background Two
Place pairs of 1/4-square triangles right sides together, butting the center seam together. Again with a pencil, draw a diagonal line - this time perpendicular to your previously sewn seam.
Sew down both sides, cut apart and trim units to 3-1/2” square. See our tutorial for detailed pictures of how to do this.

Check back on the 31st of January to see how to put your X blocks together.

Then, when your quiltlet is finished, click here
to upload a picture of your mystery to our challenge website.

Or email it to: peawink-b13v@post.me.com

Be sure to put your full name in the subject line and label your file: Your Name - Quilt Name.jpg

Submit an idea / description for next month, email Jovita.

If you don’t like it, wipe it off and try again.
